Ce voile levé, c’est toute la violence de cette arrestation qui éclate aux yeux de tou.te.s. C’est le déchaînement de la brutalité de ces six agents de police, qui l’ont humilié et tabassé, et dont on est en droit de penser qu’ils l’ont fait sans peur des conséquences, parce que Mike était un migrant africain et noir, automatiquement suspecté de deal. Il était aux yeux de l’Etat et de ses institutions, une personne sans droit.
Nous nous rassemblons parce que Mike et sa famille, ainsi toutes les autres personnes dans sa situation, ont au contraire des droits, dont le droit à la justice. Il est nécessaire que les actions de ces six policiers soient jugés par un tribunal dans le cadre d’un procès public, afin que toute la lumière soit faite. Une lumière qui doit aussi éclairer les manquements intolérables des institutions suisses à l’égard de personnes noires, en déni des droits humains. Les violences policières et le racisme systémique doivent enfin être reconnus et combattus !

On February 28th 2018, Mike Ben Peter died at the hands of the Lausanne police force. On September 17th 2018, his family’s lawyer, as well as the lawyers of the six police officers indicted until then for homicide by negligence, speak in the press about the results of the complete autopsy report that they just received. The thesis of a cocaine overdose, held by many as a sufficient explanation for Mike’s death, is definitely excluded : no trace of cocaine was found in his body.
Once this veil has been removed, the violence of this arrest becomes obvious to the eyes of everybody, as does the outburst of brutality from these six police officers, who humiliated him and beat him up. Furthermore, we would be legitimate to think that they did it without fear of the consequences, because Mike was black and an African migrant, and thus automatically suspected of dealing drugs. In the eyes of the State and its institutions, he was a person without rights.
On the contrary, we gather to say out loud that Mike and his family, as well as all the other people in a similar situation, have rights, including the right to justice. It is necessary that the actions of these six police officers be judged by a court in a public trial, in order for complete light to be shed on what happened. This light also needs to be cast on the unacceptable bias and weaknesses of Swiss institutions regarding black persons, in total contradiction with human rights. Police violence and systemic racism must be acknowledged and fought !
