Dans le hall, deux policiers gardent la porte de la salle dans laquelle se déroule l’audience. L’un des deux policiers arbore un symbole particulier sur son uniforme officiel. Il s’agit d’un insigne « Thin Blue Line Switzerland »…
Ce symbole, réutilisé suite au meurtre de Georges Floyd aux Etats-Unis par la police, s’inscrit en opposition au mouvement « Black Lives Matter ». Ce slogan est un cri de ralliement des forces de polices pour défendre leur légitimité et s’imposer comme protecteurs du peuple et/ou comme victimes.
Ce symbole corporatiste est initié et fréquemment utilisé et par les mouvements d’extrême droite situés au Royaume-Uni, au Canada, aux Etats-Unis ou encore en Suisse.
Concrètement, ce mouvement veut défendre les droits de la police et sa légitimité inébranlable peu importe les circonstances en niant systématiquement toute défaillance potentielle ou encore toute violence policière. Ce même symbole est à présent interdit dans plusieurs lieux dont le Canada, Le Royaume-Uni, la France et de nombreux états des Etats-Unis. Et en Suisse, il est interdit selon les directives de la LPers d’arborer un tel symbole.
Fréquemment lié aux mouvements d’extrême-droite, « Thin Blue Line » [1] contribue à nier la réalité des violences policières et leur caractère raciste tout en défendant une impunité policière sans limites. Ce déni s’inscrit principalement autour de l’ensemble des discriminations et des violences qui sont infligées aux personnes minorisées et principalement aux personnes noires.

Nous savons que la réponse de la police viendra nuancer ces dires en décrivant un contexte « autre » dans lequel cet insigne est porté de manière anodine et apolitique. Quand bien même il existerait une section romande active (éventuellement basée à Daillens), ce sont des influences racistes qui inspirent les agents à arborer ce signe haineux.
Garder l’entrée d’un procès incriminant des policiers ayant assassiné une personne noire en arborant ce symbole n’est pas juste un manque de respect ou de l’arrogance, il s’agit bel et bien d’une insulte raciste violente à la mémoire de Mike Ben Peter et à l’ensemble de sa famille et de ses soutiens.
Nous refusons cette violence et continuerons à nous battre pour la faire cesser.

TRIAL OF THE KILLERS OF MIKE BEN PETER : A POLICE OFFICER DISPLAYS A RACIST SYMBOL AT THE ENTRANCE TO THE COURTROOM
As part of the trial of the 6 police officers who murdered Mike Ben Peter in 2018, the police presence around the court was substantial on Tuesday 13 June 2023. Outside the courtroom, 4 to 6 police officers strut arrogantly around the public. Their smiles are eloquent, and the glares are directed at Mike’s family and supporters.
In the hall, two police officers guard the door to the room in which the hearing is taking place. One of them is wearing a special symbol on his official uniform. It is a “Thin Blue Line Switzerland” badge...
This symbol, reused following the murder of George Floyd in the United States by the police, is in opposition to the “Black Lives Matter” movement. The slogan is a rallying cry for police forces to defend their legitimacy and establish themselves as protectors of the people and/or as victims.
This corporatist symbol was initiated and is frequently used by extreme right-wing movements in the United Kingdom, Canada, the United States and Switzerland.
In concrete terms, this movement aims to defend the rights of the police and their unshakeable legitimacy, whatever the circumstances, by systematically denying any potential failings or police violence. This same symbol is now banned in several places, including Canada, the UK, France and many US states. And in Switzerland, under the terms of the LPers Rule, it is forbidden to display such a symbol.
4. Obligations of employees
Employees shall at all times ensure that their conduct is compatible with the position
they hold. In particular, they shall pay special attention to their dress code. They shall ensure that their dress complies with the general principles of neutrality and the above-mentioned principles, so as not to offend the people with whom they are in contact.
In their relations with users of the administration, they shall refrain from displaying
signs likely to damage the credibility and image of the State in the eyes of the public,
in particular signs with a strong symbolic impact or ostensibly revealing a belief, a
political or religious affiliation.
Frequently linked to extreme right-wing movements, “Thin Blue Line” contributes to denying the reality of police violence and its racist nature, while defending unlimited police impunity. This denial focuses mainly on the discrimination and violence inflicted on minorities, particularly black people.
We know that the police response will qualify these statements by describing a “different” context in which this badge is worn in a harmless and apolitical manner. Even if there were an active section in French-speaking Switzerland (possibly based in Daillens), it is racist influences that inspire officers to wear this hateful sign.
Guarding the entrance to a trial against police officers who murdered a black person by displaying this symbol is not just disrespectful or arrogant, it is a violent racist insult to the memory of Mike Ben Peter and all his family and supporters.
We reject this violence and will continue to fight to stop it.
